What a Bright Idea

At the 2012 Shot Show, ASP Inc. unveiled the newest version of the Triad Tactical Light, called the Triad USB. Having seen the product videos posted on YouTube and ASP Inc., (www.ASP-usa.com) I could not wait to get my hands on it.

As its name suggests, officers are able to charge the light via a micro USB port located in the head of the light. Beginning in 2012, all cell phone manufacturers, including Apple, have agreed to use the micro USB as a universal charger power connector. Accessories included with every Triad USB light include a ballistic nylon zippered case, USB cord, wall charger, an adapter for use in a vehicle, and a detachable/adjustable pocket clip.

Recently, I had the opportunity to perform a test and evaluation session with the Triad USB light. It is classified as a rechargeable light; however, in a pinch officer

The Triad USB comes with a retractable Micro USB to USB cord, car charger and wall plug.

s can remove the rechargeable lithium-ion power pack and insert two CR 123A batteries to power the light in the event the main battery is depleted before the completion of an assignement. This allows the light to function longer and gives the officer more flexibility when on duty.

I tested and evaluated the ASP Triad USB light for thirty days. My job duties require me to work both first and third shift. In the performance of theses duties, I am required to wear a standard uniform and tactical training clothing. During this time, the light was subject to operational demands and served as my primary duty light. I mounted the light to a 5.56 rifle, a 308 rifle, and a 12’gauge shotgun. I fired several hundred rounds with each weapon. I was able to select all three light settings using only one hand and wearing thick tactical gloves. During the testing phase, the light performed to my expectations and without any issues.

Loosening the head of the Triad reveals the micro USB port. In testing, I was capable of fully charging the Triad with several different kinds of micro USB chargers. A solid green light located next to the micro USB port indicated the unit is fully charged. A blinking red light indicates it is not completely charged. In addition, the added feature of the blinking light assists colorblind officers so they will be able to determine the light is not ready for use.

The Triad USB measures in at 5.5 inches and weighs only 5.4 ounces. I found it to be lightweight and comfortable. It produces 300 lumens (ANSI standard) and has a continuous run time of 90 minutes. It is designed to last 300 to 500 charges. This is dependent on how deeply it is charged. It comes with a lifetime guarantee for any defects in materials or workmanship.

The body of the light is smooth and without sharp edges. Around the head of the light are diamond shaped flat areas. This stops the light from rolling if placed on a level surface. The pocket clip attaches at the light’s upper portion. The light can be carried bezel up or down. No tools are required and it is adjustable. The Triad USB has a foamed vinyl grip. I found it to be effective for both retaining the light and providing cushion for the palm of my hand.

The Triad USB shares the same operating features as ASP’S other Triad series lights. The three position rotary sleeve is located at the base of the light. Rotating the sleeve to the left provides intermittent light when the activation button is pressed. Rotating the sleeve to the right provides constant illumination when the activation button is pressed. Pressing the activation button a second time will turn the light off. The center position locks the activation button. This stops the light from accidentally being turned on. I was able to activate all three positions with one hand while wearing various types of tactical gloves.

The light was left on for a period of thirty minutes without fail or any major issued with heat buildup. In addition, the light was placed in a freezer for twenty-four hours. When removed the light was activated and all settings worked without fail.

The size and weight of the light made it easy to carry and access when needed.  I was able to charge the light regardless of the USB device I used.  Being able to change the light from a wall outlet, a computer and or my personal vehicle has placed this light in a class all its own.

Gone are the days of bulky wall chargers. The ASP Triad USB offers cost effective and reliable options for officers. Based on my findings and use of the Triad USB light I would recommend this light for use in Law Enforcement or any tactical setting.

Armament Systems and Procedures (ASP), one of the most respected names in law enforcement products worldwide, will introduce several new products at the upcoming IWA & OutdoorClassics 2012 show in Nuremberg, Germany March 9-12, including the market’s first Micro USB rechargeable tactical and handheld LED lights.

ASP will introduce the rechargeable Triad USB flashlight, the rechargeable Sapphire USB handheld light, the P12 and P16 Batons, the Triad Tactical Light Case and the Pink Palm and Key Defenders. For more information about all of these products and to watch product videos, go to www.asp-usa.com.

ASP Chairman and CEO Kevin Parsons, Ph.D., says the new, innovative products will expand ASP’s tactical and consumer light lines, and, at the same time, improve the company’s long and strong standing in the baton market. Parsons says the products will benefit both public safety professionals and general consumers, particularly with the new Micro USB technology. The Micro USB is the power connector that all cell phone manufacturers have agreed to implement as a standard universal phone charger by the end of 2012.

“Our revolutionary rechargeable technology is aimed at convenience,” Parsons said. “Users will be able to fully re-charge the Triad USB and the Sapphire USB using their cellphone chargers or even their computers. The Micro USB technology will also eliminate the need in many cases for multiple power cords.”

ASP encourages people to check out these new products and its entire line of soon-to-be-released flashlights at its IWA & OutdoorClassics 2012 booth (Booth #7A427) in the Exhibition Centre Nuremburg.
The show runs daily from 9 am – 6 pm, except for Monday, March 12th when the hours are 9 am – 4 pm.

We have just added a seventh color to our popular line of Palm and Key Defenders: Pink! The Palm is the smallest of our OC series while the Key is mid-sized Defender.

Since we design all of our consumer products to professional law enforcement standards, our Defenders are much more than spray cans loaded with chemical irritants. They are dispersion systems with specially produced valve systems and a patented dispensing mechanism. Our design eliminates the likelihood of accidental discharge.

Our two newest Concealable Batons

The days when you needed big, bulky duty batons to adequately protect yourselves on the street are definitely over. It seems every year we’re designing smaller and smaller batons that are as devastatingly effective as any baton you’ve ever carried.

Today at the SHOT Show in Las Vegas, NV we introduced our two newest concealable batons, the P12 and the P16.  When retracted, these two batons are both less than 7 inches (the P12 is only 5 inches), but our patented steel/aluminum design still provides the striking force of a standard duty baton. If you have a moment, read our entire press release and watch our product video.

The P12 and P16 are part of our Friction Loc Baton series and can easily be concealed in a waistband, a purse or even a pocket, making them perfect if you’re an administrator, a plainclothes investigator or an undercover cop.

Thanks to technological advancements and our unique design, we are confident that you aren’t compromising one ounce of power by carrying one of our concealable batons.

Check out the P12 and P16 and let us know what you think.

The Sapphire USB – our new rechargeable handheld light

January 18th, 2012 § Leave a Comment

We’re probably best known as a company that makes batons and handcuffs for police officers and public safety professionals. But the truth is we have a long history of designing popular products for the general consumer, too.

Our Sapphire handheld lights might be the best example.

We introduced our first Sapphire light in 1998 and have sold approximately 5 million over the past 14 years.

Today, at the SHOT Show in Las Vegas, we proudly introduced our latest version of the Sapphire, the Sapphire USB, the only Micro USB rechargeable handheld LED light on the market. The Sapphire USB has an all-metal frame, an ambidextrous switch, intermittent/constant activation, glass panels, a lithium polymer battery and, again, Micro USB charging.

The bottom line is that our new Sapphire USB is stronger, sturdier, and brighter, with more features than its two predecessors. Plus, there’s no need for batteries any longer. For more details, read our press release.

We’re calling it an everyday light for everyone. We know cops clip it to their shirts or ties to read their notes while they type reports on their squad laptops. And we also know that the general public uses the Sapphire USB to walk their dogs, read in bed or look for lost items.

Like we said, it’s an everyday light for everyone. We think it’s for you! Check it out and let us know what you think.

Our new Micro USB rechargeable Tactical flashlight

January 17th, 2012 § Leave a Comment

We’re really excited about our new rechargeable Triad USB tactical flashlight that we unveiled today at the SHOT Show in Las Vegas, NV. This is the first Micro USB rechargeable tactical LED light on the market, and we believe it is incredibly convenient yet just as dependable as any tactical flashlight in our line – or in any of our competitors’ lines.

Since it is fully charged using a Micro USB power cord, the Triad USB allows you to use the same power coord you use for your cellphone. If you don’t have a Micro USB rechargeable phone yet, you likely will someday soon. Cell phone manufacturers have agreed to implement this type of power chord in their phones by the end of 2012.

The Triad USB’s switch allows you to shine the beam intermittently or constantly depending on the situation you’re faced with on the street. The LED technology in the Triad USB is second to none producing a staggering 300 lumens of light and a continuous runtime of 90 minutes.

We strongly believe its one of the best and brightest lights out there. We hope you’ll check it out and let us know what you think.  Read our full press release and watch our product video.
